Set within a vast 400,000-acre private reserve Abu Camp occupies its own pristine pocket of riverine forest in the heart of the Okavango Delta. Named after a very special bull elephant, the camp was the original base camp for Africa’s first elephant back safaris 17 years ago and today it continues to thrive, having been reborn with a full refurbishment in early 2011.
Each of the six luxury en-suite tents boasts its own distinctive furnishings and fittings, imparting an air of opulence amid the bush setting. Each tent also has its own private elevated teak deck sculpted around one of the lofty sycamore figs or Jackal Berry trees with views only the Okavango could provide.
Well-lit pathways link tents with the main lounge and dining area. The lounge, replete with comfortable antique furnishings, boasts an absorbing library of field guides and illustrated volumes on the wildlife surrounding the camp and throughout the Delta. A well-stocked bar provides drinks and cocktails for post-safari sundowners around a campfire while most meals are enjoyed al fresco on the deck. Nearby a secluded plunge pool enables guests to cool off and relax.
Of course, the signature experience offered at Abu is the opportunity to interact with the resident elephant herd, meeting each individual and initiating a journey into the complex behavior of the largest land mammal on Earth. Guests invited to become part of the herd during their stay, watching the evening feeding, sharing the simple joy of a frolicking youngster, and accompanying them on foot as they move through the bush. Viewing wildlife from atop an elephant allows a closer approach to other animals than can be achieved when simply walking as an obvious human figure.
