In 2011, filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert released their epic documentary, “The Last Lions,” following the story of one lioness and her cubs in one of the most remote regions of Botswana. The Jouberts’ masterful films have always been aimed at furthering conservation based causes and this is no exception. Now, as part owners of Great Plains Conservation, they are taking their efforts to the next level.
“We took on this project The Last Lions like all of our films specifically for conservation. We’re particularly worried that lions have declined by 95% in our lifetimes and I decided that it was time to tell that to as many people as possible, because only once we understand a problem can we do anything about it. So I’m as delighted that within Great Plains we are able to put our money were our mouths are and offer a package to anyone travelling to any Great Plains camp, and staying 4 nights and we will donate $100 directly to the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative. This goes directly into big cat conservation in the field. It really is time for all of us, those in conservation as well as those who know Africa so well from a travel business perspective to come together to try to solve this problem and I can’t over state the problem…50 years ago there where 450,000 lions and today we have just 20,000 left. At this rate if you are planning a safari for your kids in ten years time, there will not be a free range lion left. Together though, with numbers, with support we can still turn this curve around. That is why we made The Last Lions and started the Big Cats Initiative”
